When we first opened Wallace River Ranch, our goal was simple: create a peaceful getaway where guests could slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience a little bit of ranch life.
Over the years, we've continued to invest in improving the guest experience, and this year we took on one of our biggest projects yet — replacing the traditional dome windows on two of our domes with custom glass window fronts.
Why We Made the Change
After several years of welcoming guests, the original plastic windows on our domes were beginning to show signs of wear and tear from Nova Scotia's weather, sun exposure, and changing seasons.
Like many dome owners, we reached a point where we had to make a decision: simply replace the aging plastic windows with new ones or take the opportunity to invest in something even better.
Rather than replacing what was there, we decided to take a step further and explore the possibility of installing permanent glass windows.
The project was completed on our Bear Dome and Otter Dome, which now feature the new glass window fronts. To the best of our knowledge, Wallace River Ranch is the first dome accommodation business in Nova Scotia to offer this style of glass window upgrade, creating a unique glamping experience that combines the charm of dome living with expansive, unobstructed views.
Our Eagle Dome continues to offer the traditional dome experience with its original style of plastic windows, giving guests the option to choose between the classic dome design and our upgraded glass-front domes.
Our goal wasn't just to refresh the domes—it was to improve the overall guest experience. We wanted to create a clearer view of the surrounding countryside, bring in more natural light, and make the connection between the indoors and outdoors even stronger.
While the glass window project required significantly more planning, investment, and problem-solving than a standard replacement, we felt it was the right long-term decision for both our guests and the future of Wallace River Ranch.

A Challenging Project
Like many projects at Wallace River Ranch, this wasn't as simple as ordering a product and installing it.
The glass windows are significantly larger and heavier than traditional dome windows, requiring modifications to the dome structure and installation methods. There was plenty of problem-solving along the way, but we're incredibly happy with the final result.
One thing we quickly learned was just how strong the installation silicone was. It's fantastic for holding glass windows in place—but not so fantastic when it gets on your hands! Despite our best intentions, we didn't always remember to wear gloves and spent a few days with black hands that refused to come clean. It's one of those small details that comes with tackling projects yourself.
As a small family-run business, many of our improvements happen through hard work, trial and error, and a determination to keep making the experience better for our guests.

What We Learned Along the Way
One thing we've learned over the years is that owning and operating domes in Nova Scotia comes with unique challenges. Our domes experience everything from coastal winds and heavy rain to snow, ice, and summer heat.
The glass window project taught us a great deal—not only about installation techniques, but also about how larger domes can behave differently than smaller dome models. Some of the solutions that worked for us differed from standard installation recommendations, and we made adjustments along the way to ensure the best possible long-term result.
As a small business, we're always learning, improving, and sharing ideas with others in the industry.
If you're a fellow dome owner or are considering adding domes to your property and have questions about our experience with glass windows, operating domes in Nova Scotia, or lessons we've learned along the way, please feel free to reach out. We're always happy to connect and share what has worked for us.

Looking Ahead
We're proud of how far Wallace River Ranch has come since welcoming our first guests. Every improvement we make is guided by one question:
"How can we make the experience even better?"
The new glass windows are another step in that journey, and we can't wait for more guests to experience them for themselves.
